What are Neurodegenerative Disorders?

We are here to help...

Healing Neurodegenerative Disorders

Sadly, conventional medicine often falls short in addressing neurodegenerative disorders. It tends to overlook prevention, fails to fully investigate the underlying causes of your condition, and offers only limited treatment options. As a result, many patients feel disempowered and helpless as their symptoms worsen over time.

At Aspen Integrative Medical Center, we take a different approach—one that offers hope through a comprehensive and personalized care plan by:

  • Prescribing individualized treatment plans based on your unique needs and symptoms rather than standardized protocols.
  • Identifying and addressing root causes instead of simply suppressing symptoms.
  • Incorporating natural and cutting-edge therapies rather than relying solely on pharmaceuticals.
  • Providing open-minded, collaborative, and supportive care instead of a narrow, one-size-fits-all model.
  • Empowering and educating you so you feel informed and in control of your health journey.

Our physicians are among the few in Northern Arizona who specialize in neurodegenerative conditions, offering integrative therapies and brain-healing protocols designed to slow disease progression—and in some cases, even support symptom reversal. Treatments may include deep tissue laser therapy, hyperbaric oxygen therapy, brain-enhancing nutrient therapy, IV therapy, EBOO, and biotherapeutic drainage.

Our physicians will work with you to create a thorough, individualized treatment plan that addresses the root causes of your condition and helps you regain quality of life.

What is the most important thing to know about neurodegenerative disorders?

EVERYONE should focus on preventing and treating neurodegeneration—also known as cognitive decline. You don’t need a diagnosis of a severe condition like Parkinson’s Disease to take this seriously. Through naturopathic medicine, we can effectively prevent cognitive decline and help you maintain a higher quality of life as you age.

Why is this so important?

  • Cognitive decline affects the whole family, not just the individual.
  • It’s more than dementia—it impacts mood, concentration, motivation, performance, and relationships.
  • Time matters. The earlier you address and prevent symptoms, the more you can change the trajectory of your brain health and life.
  • Cognitive decline can begin before testing or imaging shows anything abnormal.

Some early signs your brain may be in trouble:

  • Changes in mood and affect
  • Trouble focusing or concentrating
  • Forgetting events, dates, names, or appointments
  • Difficulty solving problems, managing finances, or following recipes
  • Misjudging distance or having trouble reading
  • Struggling to find words while speaking
  • Frequently misplacing items like keys or your phone
  • Impaired judgment, such as falling for scams
  • Withdrawing from social activities
  • Changes in mood or personality, including new likes, dislikes, or behaviors

What are neurodegenerative disorders?

Neurodegenerative disorders are a group of conditions marked by the progressive degeneration of the nervous system, particularly the neurons (nerve cells). These disorders lead to a gradual decline in cognitive, motor, and/or sensory functions.

Common neurodegenerative disorders include:

  • Alzheimer’s Disease: A progressive brain disorder affecting memory, thinking, and behavior.
  • Parkinson’s Disease: Primarily affects movement, causing tremors, stiffness, and coordination difficulties.
  • Huntington’s Disease: A genetic disorder that leads to the progressive breakdown of nerve cells, impacting movement, cognition, and behavior.
  • Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS): Also called Lou Gehrig’s disease, ALS affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord, leading to muscle weakness and loss of control.
  • Multiple Sclerosis (MS): An autoimmune disorder affecting the central nervous system, causing vision problems, balance issues, and muscle control difficulties.
  • Frontotemporal Dementia (FTD): Disorders characterized by progressive degeneration of the frontal and/or temporal lobes, leading to changes in personality, behavior, and language.
What are the causes of neurodegenerative disorders?

Neurodegenerative disorders often have complex, multifactorial causes. While genetics can “load the gun,” epigenetic factors—like lifestyle, environmental toxins, and stress—can “pull the trigger.” In essence, chronic inflammation and reduced blood flow to the brain lead to:

  • Loss of neuroplasticity: The brain’s ability to reorganize and form new neural connections is impaired, reducing its capacity to compensate for injury or disease.
  • Reduced neurogenesis: The growth of new neurons is decreased, limiting brain repair and resilience.

Factors that can contribute to neurodegeneration include:

  • Dietary: A standard American diet can cause inflammation, oxidative stress, and nutrient deficiencies.
  • Lifestyle: Alcohol use, smoking, sedentary behavior, and lack of exercise.
  • Genetic: Mutations and SNPs that affect nervous system function or detoxification.
  • Toxin burden: Exposure to heavy metals, pesticides, air pollution, solvents, chemicals, antimicrobials, cosmetics, and household products.
  • Gastrointestinal distress: Constipation, diarrhea, or IBS can disrupt the gut microbiome, impair nutrient absorption, and weaken detox pathways.
  • Pharmaceutical side effects: Long-term use of certain medications (e.g., acid blockers) can lead to nutrient deficiencies.
  • Infection burden: Chronic infections from bacteria, viruses, parasites, Lyme disease, or mold.
  • Social factors: Isolation or lack of engagement.
  • Metabolic stress: Conditions like diabetes, hypertension, obesity, stroke, or heart disease.
  • Vascular health: Circulation issues or high blood pressure affecting brain blood flow.
  • Aging: As we age, cells naturally degenerate and produce less energy (ATP).

How do you treat neurodegenerative disorders?

The treatment of neurodegenerative disorders depends on the root cause(s), severity, and specific characteristics of your condition. Our goal is not only to help you manage symptoms and improve quality of life, but also to explore the “why” behind your condition—so we can prevent progression and, when possible, support symptom reversal.

Treatment often focuses on reducing neuroinflammation, stimulating neurogenesis, and strengthening neuroplasticity. This is achieved by balancing blood sugar, protecting the blood-brain barrier, promoting nerve stem cell growth, and preventing secondary complications.

Integrative treatment plans are individualized and may include:

  • Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy: Increases oxygen delivery to the brain, promoting healing and reducing inflammation.
  • EBOO IV Ozone Therapy: Stimulates mitochondrial activity, reduces inflammation, supports chronic infection management, and improves blood flow.
  • Deep Tissue Laser Therapy: Supports cellular repair, reduces neuroinflammation, and encourages new neuron formation.
  • Biotherapeutic Drainage: Supports cellular detoxification and tissue drainage, including from the brain.
  • Anti-Inflammatory Diet: Foods to reduce inflammation, support nutrient levels, heal the gut, and create a healthy microbiome.
  • Lifestyle Recommendations: Guidance on sleep, exercise, screen use, social engagement, and overall daily habits.
  • Nutrient Supplementation: Brain-supporting vitamins, anti-inflammatories, ketones, fish oil, choline, resveratrol, CoQ10, and more.
  • IV Therapy: High-dose nutrients delivered directly to the bloodstream for faster brain and nervous system support.
  • Neurofeedback and Brain Mapping: Identifies areas of poor brain function and helps restore normal brain wave patterns to improve mood, energy, and sleep.
  • Botanical Medicine: Plant-based therapies that enhance circulation to the brain and support new neuron formation.
  • Craniosacral Therapy: Gentle manual therapy that releases cranial restrictions and calms neuroinflammation.

Our physicians may also refer you to other specialists for imaging (CT, MRI), neuropsychological assessments, rehabilitation therapies, or assistive devices, ensuring a comprehensive approach to your care.

Our doctors use a variety of therapies to support brain health, including deep tissue laser therapy, hyperbaric oxygen therapy, EBOO, IV nutrient therapy, and biotherapeutic drainage. These treatments are designed to work synergistically. For example, hyperbaric oxygen therapy may provide even greater benefit when followed by a series of IV infusions containing key nutrients such as vitamin C, taurine, carnitine, magnesium, B vitamins, potassium, calcium, glutathione, and molybdenum.

We offer a truly integrative approach to improving brain health.
