What is EBOO?

Detoxify, oxygenate, and restore with...

EBOO

EBOO/F (stands for Extracorporeal Blood Oxygenation Ozonation and Filtration) is the most advanced IV ozone therapy available, delivering the highest level of health benefits. This treatment infuses 210–420 mg of continuous oxygen-ozone gas into your blood while simultaneously detoxifying 2–3 liters of blood, removing harmful toxins. Like our other IV ozone therapies, EBOO enhances oxygen utilization, stimulates the body’s natural healing processes, strengthens the immune system, kills pathogens, and so forth; however, EBOO is the only IV ozone device that simultaneously filters your blood while it is being ozonated. Our clinic exclusively uses the STRATOS EBOO machine by TrigenO3 which has the highest efficacy and safety standards.

Main health benefits of EBOO include:

  • Tissue regeneration
  • Immune system support
  • Pain reduction
  • Pathogen elimination
  • Reduced inflammation
  • Enhanced detoxification
  • Improved circulation

EBOO therapy at our clinic is led by Dr. Paul Despres, a Fellow of the American Academy of Ozonotherapy (AAOT) and one of Northern Arizona’s most experienced ozone therapy physicians. Dr. Despres was the first to bring EBOO to Flagstaff after it helped him overcome a chronic illness he had battled for over 25 years. He now carefully tailors each EBOO treatment plan to support your unique health goals while minimizing risk.

Why is EBOO superior to other IV ozone options?

EBOO is superior to all other IV ozone options because of its unique design similar to dialysis.

During treatment 2-3 liters of your blood is:

  1. Ozonated: The process of enriching your blood with an oxygen-ozone (O3) mixture and infused back it into the body to stimulate natural healing processes. This supports deep healing at a cellular level which enhances oxygen utilization, dramatically reduces inflammation, kills pathogens, boosts energy production, and neutralizes free radicals.
  2. Detoxed and Filtered: A breakthrough approach that runs your blood through an advanced filtration system to remove harmful substances—including toxins, biofilms, blood clots, microplastics, heavy metals, and pathogens.

UPDATE: Recent clinical studies led by Dr. Robin Rose suggest that EBOO may help reduce levels of Covid-19 spike proteins and toxin-like peptides in the body—factors increasingly associated with Long Covid and post-Covid complications.

What are the reported health benefits of EBOO?

Through increased oxygen utilization and other pathways EBOO has been shown to:

  • Appears to reduce Covid-19 spike protein and associated toxin-like peptides
  • Inactivate of viruses, bacteria, fungi, yeast, parasites, and protozoa
  • Increase energy and metabolism by accelerating ATP (energy) production
  • Exert anti-inflammatory effects
  • Improve athletic performance and recovery
  • Stimulate detoxification
  • Reduce pain
  • Stimulate the immune system to increase healing
  • Scavenge excess free radicals, which are key in rejuvenation and overall health
  • Up-regulate antioxidant enzyme defenses
  • Improve circulation by clearing the arteries and veins
  • Reduces ischemia in vascular disease by increasing the red blood cells pliability and flexibility
  • Purify blood and lymph
  • Remove cholesterol including LDL and fat deposits in the blood

FAQ About EBOO

Health Benefits and Research

As the most advanced form of IV ozone therapy, EBOO is particularly beneficial for individuals with:

  • Chronic illnesses such as chronic fatigue, autoimmune disease, fibromyalgia, diabetes, hepatitis, etc.
  • Long Covid-19 and vaccine related injuries
  • Cardiovascular conditions – cholesterol disorders, hypertension, cardiovascular disease, peripheral arterial disease.
  • Acute and chronic infections – herpes, Lyme disease, EBV, shingles
  • Neurological conditions – Parkinson’s disease, dementia, neuropathy
  • Inflammatory conditions, chronic pain, and fibromyalgia
  • Gastrointestinal conditions – Crohn’s disease, colitis, Celiac disease
  • Vaccine injuries

Also a great treatment for individuals seeking:

  • Improved energy and vitality
  • Stronger immune system and overall wellness enhancement
  • Superior athletic recovery and performance
  • Patients undergoing detoxification therapies

The EBOO filtration is essential to cleansing your blood of physical debris that neither the kidneys, nor liver, are capable of removing. The purified, debris-free blood is then re-infused back into the patient.

EBOO appears to remove the following from the body:

  • Covid-19 spike protein and associated toxin-like peptides
  • Heavy Metals – lead, mercury, cadmium, arsenic, etc.
  • Extracellular inflammatory fluid
  • Endotoxins – which are fragments of pathogenic bacteria, fungus and mold infections that have been killed.
  • Biofilms – which is a kind of protective layer that many pathogenic microbes create to hide behind and where our immune cells can not penetrate.
  • Debris from our own tissues that have been damaged from the infecting microbes and/or from powerful antimicrobial pharmaceutical drugs.
  • Micro clots – microscopic blood clots that are resistant to the body’s own fibrinolytic processes.
  • Fungi
  • Residuals for medications
  • Environmental and industrial toxins – pesticides etc.
  • Chemotherapy
  • Excessive and/or abnormal blood clotting
  • Other impurities

EBOO is one of the most effective methods for eliminating acute and chronic pathogens because it exposes the patient’s blood to a high dose of ozone, effectively neutralizing bacteria, viruses, fungi, parasites, and more.

Beyond its powerful antimicrobial effects, EBOO also incorporates an advanced filtration process. Many patients continue to experience debilitating symptoms even after infections are cleared due to residual “debris” left behind, known as the Herxheimer Reaction. This debris includes cellular remnants from dead pathogens, endotoxins, biofilms, micro clots, and abnormal clotting—commonly associated with conditions like COVID-19 and Chronic Inflammatory Response Syndrome (CIRS). Additionally, the body accumulates waste from damaged tissues and medications used to fight infections.

Unlike the kidneys and liver, which are not designed to efficiently clear this debris, EBOO’s filtration system captures it—returning only purified blood to the patient. As a result, many patients report immediate relief from their symptoms.

EBOO is uniquely positioned as a promising therapy for individuals suffering from Long Covid. By targeting multiple proposed root causes of prolonged symptoms, EBOO may offer comprehensive support for recovery. For example, EBOO has the potential to:

  • Support the detoxification of Covid-19 spike proteins and toxin-like peptides
  • Enhance circulation and aid in the clearance of microclots
  • Improve mitochondrial function and cellular energy
  • Saturate tissues with oxygen to promote repair and regeneration
  • Stimulate the immune system to help eliminate persistent viral reservoirs and co-infections, such as Lyme disease, Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), Mycoplasma pneumonia, and others

Dr. Robin Rose of Terrain Health has been at the forefront of research measuring spike protein and toxin-like peptide levels before and after EBOO treatments. Her preliminary findings show a significant decrease in both markers following treatment. To date, EBOO may be the only therapy demonstrating this level of impact in this area, though further studies are needed to confirm and expand upon these results.

EBOO was invented in the 1980s and has been regularly performed for at least two decades with no published reports of adverse events. There has been major improvements in EBOO technology and we exclusively use the STRATOS EBOO machine which is made in the USA.

Yes! Ozone therapy is a well-researched, highly effective treatment that addresses root causes of illness with minimal safety risks. It has been extensively studied, with over 2,000 published medical papers supporting its benefits. For more than a century, ozone therapy has been safely and successfully used across Europe, Asia, and Latin America. In the United States, pioneers like Dr. Frank Shallenberger, Dr. Robert Rowen, and the American Academy of Ozonotherapy (AAOT) have advanced this field.

As we age or experience illness and toxic exposure, our body’s ability to use oxygen declines. This leads to poor mitochondrial function, reduced antioxidant production, and a buildup of free radicals. Excess free radicals contribute to organ degeneration, weakened immune function, cancer, and other degenerative diseases. Ozone therapy helps counteract these effects by improving oxygen utilization, boosting ATP production, neutralizing free radicals, and protecting organ health. It also strengthens the immune system by stimulating T cell function, helping the body fight infections more effectively.

Dr. Frank Shallenberger says it best, “Since decreased oxygen utilization is the primary cause of degenerative disease, the treatment of all diseases including aging, auto-immune disorders, cancer, cardiovascular disease, etc. is maximally enhanced in the presence of optimal oxygen utilization. This is why ozone therapy can be used in virtually every disease.”

Neurodegenerative conditions such as Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, MS, ALS, and other forms of dementia are complex and often involve multiple underlying factors. Because there is rarely a single cause, the best treatment approach must be personalized for each patient. Contributing factors may include chronic infections, inflammation, toxin buildup, hormone imbalances, genetic predispositions, and nutrient deficiencies. We identify these imbalances through comprehensive blood, urine, and/or stool testing.

EBOO can be a very helpful part of care. It works to improve blood flow, stimulate mitochondrial activity, reduce inflammation, modulate immune function, support detox pathways, and clear infections—including COVID-19 spike protein. Based on our experience and that of our colleagues, EBOO is most effective when combined with a broader, integrative treatment plan rather than used as a stand-alone therapy.

Other therapies we often use alongside EBOO include diet and nutrient therapy, hyperbaric oxygen therapy, deep tissue laser therapy, and biotherapeutic drainage. Together, these approaches address the root causes of neurodegeneration and support the body’s natural healing process.

What to Expect

Our clinic uses exclusively the STRATOS EBOO machine by TrigenO3 because it meets the highest safety standards. The STRATOS is the gold standard in EBOO/F because:

  • Ozone concentration is limited to safe and effective therapeutic levels
  • The pump is regulated to a safe operation speed
  • It uses a filter that is tested ozone safe
  • The machine is made in America
  • Uses a carulite-200 based ozone destructor

At your establishing care appointment with Dr. Despres, he will review all required and recommended lab work to be completed prior to starting EBOO. At a minimum, the following labs are needed within 4–6 weeks of beginning treatment: complete blood count (CBC), comprehensive metabolic panel (CMP), iron/TIBC, ferritin, and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) quantitative.

Dr. Despres may also order additional tests—such as inflammatory markers (CRP, ESR, MPO), oxidative stress markers (LDH, GGT), infectious disease screening, or heavy metal testing—to gain a more complete understanding of your health and monitor progress throughout treatment.

Please note: Patients are welcome to complete a CBC, CMP, G6PD, ferritin, and iron/TIBC through another provider prior to their establishing care appointment. However, our clinic does not provide lab orders in advance, as lab testing is discussed and prescribed during your appointment with Dr. Despres.

Yes, this is especially helpful if you’re not local, live out of state, and/or plan to visit Flagstaff for a limited time. In this case, you would begin with a 60-minute virtual establishing care appointment with Dr. Despres. During this visit, he will prescribe a personalized EBOO treatment plan, order any necessary lab work, and recommend other naturopathic therapies to support your health goals. Once your labs are completed and reviewed by Dr. Despres, you’ll be able to begin EBOO treatment when you are in town.

Please note: Having easily accessible veins is important for EBOO treatment and will be discussed during your appointment. While our team is highly trained in IV therapy and skilled in catheter placement, we cannot guarantee successful line placement in every case. We do use ultrasound guidance as needed for more challenging placements.

The patient arrives for their appointment just as they would for any other IV treatment. The procedure itself is similar to dialysis: blood is withdrawn from a vein by a pump, passes through a specialized filter where it is enriched with an oxygen-ozone gas mixture, and is then reintroduced into the body through a different vein in the other arm. This filtration process removes debris from destroyed pathogens, heavy metals, fungi, and other impurities while ozonating the blood in stages. The filtration is essential to cleansing your blood of physical debris that neither the kidneys, nor liver, are capable of removing.

Because EBOO is a closed system, the blood is never exposed to outside elements, eliminating the risk of contamination. The entire treatment—including catheter placement, therapy administration, and completion—typically takes 60 to 120 minutes. For patients with difficult-to-access veins, ultrasound guidance is used to ensure safe and effective catheter placement.

Most patients find the procedure comfortable, with minimal discomfort. Some may experience a slight tingling sensation during treatment, but these effects are generally mild and temporary.

We recommend the following for the best results, but not required:
– Hydrate: Be sure you are well hydrated (drink at least 32 oz of water in the 24 hours prior to your treatment)
Eat Well: Eat a meal high in protein and healthy fats within 2 hours prior to your treatment. Limit/remove any highly processed or sugary foods.
Avoid Supplements: Avoid taking any vitamins or minerals within 2 hours prior to your treatment.
Attire: Wear a short sleeve shirt that provides easy access to both arms for placing the IV line.
Rested: Do your best to come relaxed, low stress, and well-rested.
Notification of Changes: Inform our office of any new or acute health concerns, medications, reactions, or general concerns since your last visit.
Give Feedback: Your feedback between procedures is crucial for providing tailored and relevant treatment. Plan to share your feedback at each visit or over the phone prior to your next treatment

Some patients report feeling better immediately while others report feeling better 1-2 days after treatment. Please know the ozonides from ozone therapy can persist in the body for 7-10 days, so there are on-going health benefits days after treatment. The benefits of ozone therapy are cumulative, so each additional treatment builds upon the prior treatment and treatment benefit typically lasts longer.

In general we follow these recommendations:

  • Patients with chronic illness = once weekly for 3 weeks and reassess. Typically need 4-6 treatments and then only need to return as needed with chronic symptoms flare.
  • Patients who are otherwise healthy = 2-4 times per year
  • Athletes or those under a lot of physical stress = 4-6 times per year

The number and frequency of treatments you need may vary based on your individual needs and health goals. Some conditions may require more frequent or prolonged treatment, while acute concerns may resolve after just one session.

While EBOO is highly effective, combining it with other naturopathic therapies—such as dietary and lifestyle changes, nutrient supplementation, physical medicine, and herbal medicine—can lead to more significant, long-term results by addressing the root causes of illness.

We can enhance the actions of EBOO by:
  • Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) priming the body full of oxygen first before EBOO
  • Supplemental nutrients (either via IV or orally) such as niacin, riboflavin, methyl-B12, vitamin B6, folic acid, and oral NADH. NADH given before ozone therapy will convert to NAD. We also offer NAD IVs to accelerate the healing trajectory. We recommend not taking any supplements within 2 hours of EBOO treatment.
  • Chelation therapy – when done 2-3 days prior to EBOO it will mobilize heavy metals than can be effectively filtered out using EBOO.
It’s also important to realize that ozone therapy is NOT a standalone therapy. The most effective way to maximize effects of ozone therapy is to combine it with other therapies that eliminate decreased oxygen utilization. Need to simultaneously optimize:
  • Basic foundations of health and healing such as sleep
  • Diet and nutrition – avoiding food sensitivities and inflammatory foods
  • Detoxification – especially heavy metals
  • Hormone replacement – especially adrenal and thyroid gland function
  • Stress management – manage the right amounts of coffee, alcohol, exercise, sleep, emotions, allergies, and sugar
  • Eliminate foci – 4 major sources:
    • 1.) Dental foci – periodontal issues, root canals, infected teeth, misalignment of jaw
    • 2.) Sinuses – treat with ozone
    • 3.) Gut and microbiome imbalance
    • 4.) Scars – usually cutaneous surgical scars. Did you get sick after surgery?

Yes, you can use a PICC line or a port for the return line only. Additional heparin may be needed to maintain proper flow.

Safety and Contraindications

Yes, EBOO can be your first ozone treatment, and many patients are able to complete a full EBOO session on their first visit. However, Dr. Despres will first review your full medical history and recent lab work to determine if EBOO is the most appropriate starting point for you. In some cases, he may recommend beginning with Hemealumen IV ozone therapy to assess how your body responds to ozone overall. When it’s time to begin EBOO, you will be closely monitored and guided on how to minimize any potential healing reactions afterward.

The degree of side effects varies depending on the patient’s individual health, the dose of ozone administered, and the severity of their condition. For example, patients with long-standing chronic illnesses like Long COVID or Lyme disease may experience a “healing reaction” (also known as a Herxheimer reaction or “herx”). This occurs when the immune system is stimulated, detox pathways are activated, and infections begin to die off. As a result, some patients may feel more fatigued immediately after treatment as the body prioritizes healing and recovery.

Other potential side effects may include:

  • General IV-related effects such as transient low blood sugar, headache, lightheadedness, local swelling, bruising, or irritation at the catheter insertion site
  • A temporary shift in the menstrual cycle
  • Slight hemolysis (which may cause brownish or reddish urine)

To minimize side effects, consider:

  • Staying well-hydrated
  • Getting adequate rest
  • Taking an Epsom salt bath, using a sauna, or doing a cold plunge
  • Using anti-inflammatory supplements or medications as needed
  • Eating a nutrient-dense meal with protein and healthy fats while limiting processed foods and sugars

If you experience any side effects, be sure to inform your doctor so they can provide appropriate guidance.

Yes, EBOO is extremely safe when performed by a trained, licensed medical professional using the highest-quality equipment. Side effects are rare, but some patients may experience temporary fatigue due to pathogen die-off or the activation of detoxification pathways—both considered positive healing responses.

While ozone therapy is highly safe, it is not suitable for everyone and is contraindicated in individuals with:

  • G6PD deficiency – genetic or physiological
  • Pregnancy
  • Uncontrolled hyperthyroidism
  • Active bleeding or acute hemorrhagic conditions
  • Recent acute myocardial infarction (heart attack)
  • Allergy to heparin – can use sodium citrate instead
  • Children under 16 years old, especially if under 100 lbs
  • Active steroid use is a relative contraindication
  • Low hemoglobin levels (anything below 10)
  • Low platelet levels (below 100)
  • Severe hypertension
  • Miralax or PEG (polyethylene glycol) allergy

If you have any concerns about whether EBOO is right for you, consult with your doctor to ensure it is a safe and appropriate treatment for your condition.

The answer is: it depends. Whether EBOO is safe for a nursing mother and her child depends on each individual case. Several factors must be considered, including the mother’s overall health, toxin burden, and infectious load. As with any medical treatment, it’s important to weigh the potential benefits versus risks and evaluate whether other therapies might offer similar benefit with less uncertainty.

If EBOO is determined to be appropriate, Dr. Despres takes all necessary precautions to protect both mother and child. Because EBOO can mobilize toxins (including mycotoxins) and infectious load, he may recommend that the patient store enough breast milk in advance to feed her child for the 48 hours following treatment, as an added safety measure.

During that same 48-hour period, Dr. Despres may also suggest taking a broad-spectrum binder and nattokinase. These agents can help bind and neutralize mobilized materials and further reduce the likelihood of transfer through breast milk.

In addition, Dr. Despres may recommend supportive IV therapies or other preparatory treatments to optimize the mother’s detoxification capacity. The frequency of EBOO sessions may also be adjusted or spaced out to enhance safety.
